Why I hate graduation decorations, and why you should too . . .

Okay, here's the horrible thing about parenting.  You put in 18 years of work, love, and care into your children--nurturing them from the time they were nothing but a lump of cells, and then when your children graduate from high school--Bam!--they leave home. FOREVER.

I see no reason to celebrate this event. I cried for two weeks when my oldest daughter graduated. When my oldest son graduated, I sobbed all day--and I knew he was living at home while he went to college for the first year.

My point is, why do retailers think we need balloons and streamers to remind us of the impending end of childhood?

This is what retailers think I see when I walk into the grocery store:

This is what I actually see:

Yeah, and that in a nutshell (or a piece of cake) is why I hate graduation decorations.

Love this! Great job of explaining the "reality" in graduation! :)

*hugs* Sorry this hits you so hard. All I could think when each of mine were ready was what a great adventure they had before them. I was excited for them.

I had one son and one daughter to do this for and we truly celebrated and had a great time.
What got to me was leaving my son at the MTC - something we anticipated since we found out he was a boy. We prayed for and talked about in family home evening, and I was so proud of him and we celebrated his call with a great party. Then I cried so hard I couldn't drive home and had to stop at a motel.
When he returned he was so different and totally no longer my boy - but a man, a mature, wonderful person that certainly Heavenly Father molded far better than I could have done.

Yeah, and the funny thing is that I don't have anyone graduating this year--but even the thought of my twins impending eventual graduation is enough to make me feel like weeping.

Same deal with leaving on a mission. I know I'll be a teary-eyed basket case.

How come the name and URL option isn't available on this blog? Or is my computer just being temperamental right now?

Anyway, about leaving on missions being hard - my brother and one of his best friend have less than a week difference in age, and when the time leading up to them going on missions came, I found it harder to think about the friend leaving. All my life I'd thought about my brothers going on missions but somehow it never occurred to me to prepare for our friends going...
